I recently had the honor of talking with VoyageMIA Magazine about my journey as a life coach. It was a great experience. I’m thankful for the opportunity to share my story and the story of what we do at Sirkin Creative Living Center. If you have a chance, I would love it if you would read the interview in full here. If you don’t have time right now, that’s fine. Here are some of the things we talked about.
Talking with VoyageMIA Magazine: My Journey
First, my VoyageMIA interviewer asked me to talk a little bit about myself. In response, I talked about my childhood and my professional career. I was born and grew up in the 1950s right here in Miami, though Miami then was not the same as Miami today. I remember a simpler, calmer time without the overcrowding of the buildings and the daily grind of traffic along Route US 1.
Growing up, my father’s health had a major impact on my life path. When I was six, he had his first heart attack. It was the third heart attack at age 45 that led to his death, but the first one left a big impression on my psyche. It forced me to seek comfort in unhealthy foods. This contributed to significant weight gain and yo-yo dieting from third grade until my early twenties. Combined with the fact that I was diagnosed with a spastic stomach at age 13 (the pressure of honors classes drastically increased my stress levels) and prescribed muscle relaxers and narcotics to help control it, I was beginning to follow in my father’s footsteps in terms of health.
And then I experienced my first symptom of diabetes at age 20. I knew I had to make a conscious change to live healthier.
In a year, I dropped 36 pounds. It’s now 49 years later and I never became diabetic.
Since those days, I’ve learned that health is about much more than just the physical body. It’s also about thoughts, feelings, and attitudes. I’ve attracted many experts who have been instrumental in shaping my education. Over 30 years ago, it was my physician who introduced me to the 38 Bach Flower Remedies, a natural re-balancing system that restores positive outlooks and attitudes. Using this remedy system helped me manage and release unwanted fears, feelings of being overwhelmed, patterns of over-serving others and other distressing states of mind – and it changed my life. Learning about these remedies has opened many opportunities for me. I’ve taught the Bach Remedy system to nursing and anthropology students as a guest lecturer for 8 years at the University of Miami’s School of Nursing.
