You’ve got a stack of work a mile high and stress levels that would drop a horse. You no longer enjoy your job yet you seem to spend every waking hour there. To top it all off, you feel guilty—you haven’t had any real quality time with your family for weeks. Is work-life balance possible?
Work-Life Balance Is All about Taking Small Steps
It is, but it doesn’t mean the same thing for everyone. In the end, it’s up to you to define your professional, family, health, and spiritual goals and to balance them.
It won’t be easy or quick, but it is possible. The key to work-life balance success is breaking your goals down into small, manageable steps. Here are a few you can take:
Start Your Day Earlier
If you feel rushed at any point in the day, one way to make for time for yourself is to start your day earlier. I know what you’re thinking: if you start your day earlier, you’ll have to end it earlier.
Well, yeah! If you start the day an hour earlier than usual, that hour you spend at night will no longer be necessary.
Stay Connected with Friends
Between work and family, it can be easy to let friendships go untended. Maintaining friendships outside of family life is important. A simple phone call every week or even every month might be enough to lend you clarity to any problems you may be having. Take some time today—even if it’s while you’re driving or in between meetings—to call up a friend.
But Disconnect When at Home
It’s important to pick up the phone with friends, but when you’re at home, it’s best to leave the electronics alone. You spend all day working. When you set foot in your home nothing but family should be on your mind. Of course, sometimes it’s necessary to finish your work away from the office. Set a goal to unplug and disconnect from your laptop, phone, or tablet a half hour earlier than usual.
Make One Healthy Food Choice Today
The food you eat affects everything from your cholesterol to your mood. Getting back in good health begins with a small choice.
End Your Day with Mindfulness
Meditation at the end of the day is one of the best ways to reflect on your goals. Go through your day in your mind before bed. Is there anything that still needs work? Set your goals to address any shortcomings tomorrow.
