How to Practice Self-Love in 4 Easy-to-Follow Steps

Do you know how to practice self-love? Most of the time, it is easier to show love to others than it is to show it to yourself. You might be kind to a stranger one second, then turn around and think negative thoughts about yourself the next. Showing yourself lots of love, however, can lead to improvements in other areas of your life. You can give yourself confidence, which might allow you to put yourself out there in your relationships and in your career.

You’ll never be able to take those chances, though, if you don’t learn to practice self-love. And I mean practice self-love, because it can take some work to get good at it.

Want to learn how to practice self-love? Follow these four easy steps, and you’ll be on your way to a better, more positive relationship with yourself.

Free Yourself of Negative Beliefs

You, like everyone else, have an idea about what it means to be you. Those beliefs that you have about yourself could be holding you back. If you think you’re not good enough for that promotion, are you even going to try to get it? No. What you need to do is think of how you see yourself. Are there any negative beliefs that are unwarranted? Are you being too hard on yourself? It’s one thing to be a perfectionist. It’s quite another to beat yourself up.

Get rid of that little voice inside your head that says you aren’t capable.

Be Active in Your Self-Love

Now that you know the negative beliefs that you hold about yourself, try to list the positive things. Go ahead and write them down. Keep this list somewhere where you can take it out and look at it every day until you can repeat them by heart. Make this ritual part of your “me time.” Then, throughout the day, repeat your list to yourself. These positive affirmations will help you see the good in yourself more clearly.

Be Mindful

Negative thoughts can creep into your brain like a pest. When you are mindful, you can identify them for what they are—unnecessary negativity. Once you identify these thoughts, you can banish them. Something that I like to do to calm myself after I realize that I am being negative toward myself is to focus on my breathing. It allows me to center myself, even if I only have a few minutes to spare.

Know Yourself

We all react differently to the challenges of the day. One thing that I’ve found helpful is to identify my triggers, those things that set me off and ruin my day. When you know what upsets you, you can better prepare for it.
