How to Feel Less Stressed When You Have No Time to Spare

Do you feel like you just can’t catch up? Are you constantly running from meeting to meeting, responding to emails, and juggling family and work? Wondering how to feel less stressed when you don’t have the time for stress relief?

Stress is an inevitable part of modern life. Having some stress is, in fact, good. It’s when we leave excessive stress levels unchecked that it becomes a problem. It compounds and leaves us feeling rundown and hollow. It affects not only our mental health but our physical health, too. When we start to feel that the pressure is becoming too much, that’s when we need to take a step back and find a way to relieve our stress.

“But I don’t have time.”

I get it. I really do. In my work, I see people who have schedules that don’t leave a minute to spare. Some of these schedules eat into time meant for sleep. One thing that I’ve found to be true for most people is that you’re not going to find the time—you have to make it for yourself. Whether you can carve out a few minutes, an hour, or even a full day, you have the time to focus on stress relief.

Lightning-Fast Quick Fixes

You’ve got five minutes before you have to tackle your next task. What do you do? If you’re like most people, you probably stare at your phone. That cursed object is only going to make you more stressed! If you want to learn how to feel less stressed, turn it off and do something conscious and intentional. Get up from your desk and stretch. Close your eyes, put in your headphones, and listen to a relaxing song.

Break Time

When you’ve got a little bit more time, say 15-20 minutes, it can be beneficial to step away from everything that’s going on. Take a walk around the block if you can. The important thing is to remove yourself from any stressful environment, like your workspace, to reset your mind and body. While you’re away, focus on something that’s not work-related. Go outside and read an article or a chapter.

Extended Breaks

Most busy people use extended breaks, such as lunch, to catch up on things they are behind on. If you are able to carve out an hour to focus on yourself, exercise is a great way to relieve stress. But you don’t have to go to the gym or even push yourself too hard when you’re trying to figure out how to feel less stressed. Watch some mindless TV. Catch up with a friend. Just focus on something that’s not work.

Days Off

When was the last time you allowed yourself to have a weekend? When you have a day or two, you can do a lot to reset your stress levels so that the coming week feels less hectic. Use that time to get out of your normal routine. If you haven’t gone out in a while, go out with friends. Go see a movie, by yourself if you need some alone time. If the weather permits, get outside. Whatever you do, unplug from your phone and your laptop.
